Church of São Jorge – Matriz de Velas
The Church of São Jorge, was the first church to be built on the island, commissioned in the will of Infante D. Henrique (1394-1460).
The church’s three naves contain a 16th century altarpiece offered by King D. Sebastião and a lateral altar with a vaulted roof with small box panels, featuring a statue of the holy Sacrament in the centre, carved in basalt masonry work.
