Casa-Museu dos Patudos

Casa-Museu dos Patudos

Museums and Palaces

The Patudos Museum is housed in a most attractive building drawing out the Portuguese aesthetic traditions common to the beginning of the twentieth century. Commissioned by owner José Relvas from young architect Raul Lino, a disciple of German master A. Haupt, the building incorporates an eclectic range of architectural features in line with the romanticism of that time.

Despite the great artistic value of the collection decorating the interior, the feel conveyed to the visitor is more that of the cosy intimacy of a personality possessing great sensitivity, culture and taste. This all adds an extra dimension to the usual museum collection.

In the various rooms, the walls are covered with the great Portuguese painters as well as a selection from the Flemish, German, Italian, Spanish and French schools of art. From different eras and styles, the porcelain, crystal and pottery round off the atmosphere of this museum house that seems to be ready and waiting for its owner's return. Photos, caricatures, small pieces of art add to this feeling, particularly in the library, highlighting the exceptional cultural tastes of José Relvas.

Mention must be made of the Arraiolos carpet collection, one of the biggest in Portugal. The star exhibit is a wonderful 1761 carpet done in silk on linen. In addition to the Arraiolos, there are also fine Aubusson tapestries used to set off some fine pieces of furniture.
