Pardieiro

Archaeology

The Pardieiro is an Iron Age necropolis that lies near the road between São Martinho das Amoreiras and Corte Malhão.

It was discovered in 1971 and excavation revealed eleven funereal monuments in juxtaposed sub-rectangular forms. These monuments, in stone, covered the graves that had been dug out of the schist beneath before being covered with large slabs, sometimes engraved and decorated.

The identification of the archaeological site came about following the discovery of a pillar with an inscription in the writing in the first Peninsular Iron Age language, which is now part of the Beja Regional Museum collection.
