The Misericórdia de Leiria was founded in 1544, annexing all the hospices (Santo Estêvão, Nossa Senhora da Graça, São Brás), hospitals (Hospital de Nossa Senhora de Todos os Santos, Tecelões, Espírito Santo, Ferreiros, Porto Covo, Arrabalde) and leper asylums (Santo André) existing in the city at that time.
The place chosen for its headquarters was the old Jewish quarter and some people have claimed that it was built on the site of the old synagogue. Between 1627 and 1636, the bishop Dom Dinis de Melo e Castro commissioned the building of a hospital annex, which remained in operation until 1800.
In the 18th century, the church was rebuilt by the bishop Dom Álvaro de Abranches e Noronha, and this is the building that can be seen there today. It is a Mannerist church with a sober exterior and a simple structure consisting of a single nave.
Situated in Leiria’s historic centre, it is currently managed by the Municipal Council as a space used for cultural purposes.
