Monuments

Considered to be the largest church on the island of Pico, the Igreja de Santa Maria Madalena was built in the 17th century, although it now displays a 19th-century façade decorated in the revivalist style of that period. It is worth going inside to admire the panels of historiated azulejos, the carved and gilded woodwork of the chancel and the votive images.

On 22 July each year, the traditional Festival of St. Mary Magdalene is held here, which includes a procession and other religious ceremonies. The popular festivities and their special programme make this one of the liveliest times of the year to be on the island.
