Before entering, note the the charming Art Nouveau building, designed by the architect Norte Júnior in 1905 for the residence of the painter José Malhoa.
In 1932 it was bought by Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves. As you go in, you'll sense the atmosphere of harmony and elegance in which the famous ophthalmological doctor and great collector lived. On his death, in 1965, he gave the art collected during his life to the Portuguese nation.
In the elegant rooms of the residence, the art collections are exhibited in a way that conveys the feeling of a house with life, displaying the good taste and culture of a Portuguese man with a universal spirit.
Pictures by the best Portuguese painters, porcelain from China, 18th and 19th-century furniture from Portugal but also from abroad, in particular the work of renowned French craftsmen, as well as small objects such as pocket watches and glassware, will make this visit a pilgrimage of pleasure for the senses.
