Azores wins QualityCoast Platinum Award

The Azores have been distinguished with the only QualityCoast Platinum Award, which recognises coastal environmental quality, having taken first place out of 22 competing destinations in Europe.

To award the prize, an international jury assessed indicators relating to community partners in terms of sustainability in the categories of nature, the environment, local and cultural identity, tourism and business. The Azores earned nine points out of a possible maximum of ten.

The QualityCoast programme, which is organised by the European Union’s Coastal & Marine Union (EUCC), seeks to promote destinations that offer not only sustainable tourism and economical holidays but also high quality. As a result, tourists are assured that, when they are choosing their holiday destination, the quality certification has been based on a series of assessment criteria that are the same for every country.
